LAN Voice Chat Software for Windows
If computers in your company are already networked (LAN-Local Area Network) you only need to buy some cheap $1 microphones to get voice communication capabilities for free! If you don't need phones in each office you can save a lot of money by using what you already have: networked computers.
This is a very small and easy to use application with no special requirenments for you network. Just download this file and install it on each computer. Check if the microphone is installed correctly. Set up a list of the computers you wish to communicate to, and you've installed your new phone system! When you wish to talk just start the program, choose a computer and hold the CTRL key. While you hold the Ctrl key the sounds your microphone catches are being transfered to the computer you've choosen. The person on the other computer will hear your voice because a part of the application is always active and accepting voice messages.
Some technical details: This version of the software is tuned for LAN communication and uses around 3kb/s of the network bandwidth which less than 1% of your network capabilities. We've also made a special version of this program which uses only 2Kb/s or less which means it can run smoothly even on very slow internet connected networks.
How to register
In order to continue to use the program after the evaluation period you have to register. After the registration you'll get the unlocked and unlimited version of the program. As with all of our products - you are the one who decides what is the price you want to pay for registration! However there are some rules this time: the price has to be at least $1 per computer license and the initial license cannot be less then $7. For donations of 30$ and more you can ask your company logo to be put into the application. We can also adjust the application to fit your custom needs-please contact us if you're interested.
Possible problems:
On Windows XP it is possible that windows firewall can block the voice communication. You would probably prefer to turn off the firewall on your LAN connection (you can still keep it on for you internet connection). In order to turn off the firewall for the connection right click the connection icon, select "Properties", then "Advanced" , "Windows Firewall", "Advanced". Now you can choose the connections you want the firewall off.
Your network administrator might like to hear the details: this program uses TCP port number 6587 for the communication.
This program has been tested on Microsoft Windows XP (SP1-SP2) and Microsoft Windows 2000 operating systems.
